Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay at their 43rd General Assembly in March 2023. The assembly, themed “Guided,” focused on leadership challenges and the church’s commitment to maintaining Christian values. President Figur, who has served since 2022, also contributes to the International Lutheran Council.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) held its 43rd General Assembly on March 8-9 in Loma Plata, where Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected as president for a three-year term. The assembly’s theme was “Guided,” based on Romans 8:14.
President Figur expressed his gratitude for the reelection, stating, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour. We know that—despite ourselves—our God will not abandon us.” He cited Psalm 121, reflecting his faith in God’s guidance.
He acknowledged the significant challenges of leading in today’s postmodern era, highlighting issues such as the degradation of family values and the attacks on Christian principles. However, he noted, “our church has been greatly blessed by God” as every parish is served by a pastor and the church maintains its mission throughout Paraguay.
Rev. Figur began serving the IELP as president in 2022 and is also a pastor at Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción. Additionally, he holds a position as the Latin America regional representative on the board of the International Lutheran Council since 2022.
The ILC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, commended President Figur’s reelection. He stated, “May God continue to bless your service to the church in Paraguay and your service on behalf of Lutherans worldwide through the International Lutheran Council.”
At the assembly, elections were conducted for various church positions alongside the presidential election. The IELP also dedicated a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata. Notably, President Figur serves this new congregation, requiring him to travel 500 kilometers every two weeks.
In conclusion, the reelection of Rev. Alceu Alton Figur as President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay signifies continuity in leadership and commitment to faith amidst challenges. His leadership during these complex times, along with the church’s recent activities, reflects the ongoing dedication to Christian values and community service. The IELP’s relationship with the International Lutheran Council further reinforces a global connection to the Lutheran faith.
