Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Fatalities and Displacement in Southern Africa

Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives in Mozambique and Malawi, displacing thousands and causing extensive flooding and injuries. Relief efforts are hampered by damaged infrastructure as communities seek shelter in evacuation centers following the cyclone’s progression through the region.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported that the cyclone claimed six lives, injured twenty individuals, and displaced approximately 9,525 people in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as in the central province of Zambezia.

In Malawi, three fatalities have been recorded, along with the dislocation of around 20,000 individuals in the southern region, where heavy flooding occurred due to the cyclone’s impact. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that those affected are currently receiving shelter in evacuation centers.

The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday before progressing to southern Malawi, leading to substantial flooding from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that relief efforts are being hindered due to washed-away roads and bridges, complicating access for humanitarian assistance.

This natural disaster follows Cyclone Chido, which struck the same region in December of the previous year, resulting in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to such climatic events.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has led to the deaths of nine people across Mozambique and Malawi, with significant infrastructure damage and widespread displacement. The challenges faced by relief organizations in providing assistance due to accessibility issues underline the severe impact of this disaster. The situation remains critical as the affected regions continue to grapple with the aftermath of flooding and recovery efforts.
