In Garowe, Puntland, a first-degree court has sentenced Abdifitah Abdinur to four years in prison for assaulting an 8-year-old Yemeni boy, Mohammed Caadil Hussein, at the INJI market. The victim’s family are refugees residing in the city. Evidence, including a video recording of the assault, was presented during the court session, and Abdinur, aged 42, confessed to the crime before the court.
The court not only imposed a four-year prison sentence but also prohibited Abdinur from holding any public service position for one year. He was ordered to pay $1,500 in damages to the victim for the emotional and physical injuries incurred during the incident. Judge Abdikarim Mohamed Nur noted that Abdinur had unlawfully worn a government military uniform while undertaking public service duties, which further aggravated the charges against him.
The Garowe court’s ruling reflects a decisive stance against violence, particularly towards vulnerable populations such as refugees. Abdifitah Abdinur’s sentencing to four years in prison, along with additional penalties, underscores the seriousness of his crime and sets a precedent for accountability in similar cases.
