The MRF is facilitating reconstruction in Macomia, Mozambique, following Cyclone Kenneth’s devastation. UNDP, in partnership with the government and global community, launched this recovery mechanism. Key projects include rehabilitation of infrastructure, health facilities, and educational institutions to promote sustainability and improve living conditions for local residents.
The Mozambique Recovery Mechanism (MRF) is currently facilitating the reconstruction of Macomia, a region severely impacted by Cyclone Kenneth in 2019. This initiative emphasizes rebuilding essential infrastructure with a focus on resilience and sustainability, aiming to enhance living conditions for the local populace.
In collaboration with the Government of Mozambique and the international community, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been instrumental in post-disaster recovery efforts. Following Cyclones Idai and Kenneth and Cyclone Freddy, which led to extensive destruction and displacement, the MRF was established to assist in the sustainable recovery of affected communities, including crucial infrastructure repair in Cabo Delgado Province.
The MRF’s contributions in Macomia are visible in multiple rehabilitation projects. Updates include upgrading the District Services for Planning and Infrastructure buildings with solar power and enhanced security, revitalizing the Macomia Police Station for improved public safety, and restoring the Macomia Attorney Building to enhance legal access for over 138,000 people. Additionally, educational expansion through new classrooms and a maternity ward has been initiated, significantly improving health and education services.
The MRF remains dedicated to fostering positive change in Macomia, with gratitude extended to all funding partners. Special acknowledgment was given to the European Union for its generous support, along with contributions from Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, India, and China, all of whom play a vital role in these recovery efforts.
In summary, the MRF is pivotal in reconstructing Macomia after the devastation of Cyclone Kenneth and other natural disasters. Through the collaboration of various international partners and comprehensive recovery projects, the initiative is successfully rebuilding essential infrastructure and services, thereby improving the quality of life for the local population. Continued support from global partners remains crucial for sustainable development in the region.
