The programme also included discussions on brand positioning and digital marketing strategies. Participants had the privilege of receiving guidance from various institutions, including the MCCI and the Customs Department of the Mauritius Revenue Authority, enabling them to clarify queries related to exporting under the AfCFTA and to discuss the multifaceted challenges they have encountered. During the event, Mr. Patrice Marie, the Vice-President of the MCCI, underscored the significant economic contribution of SMEs, stating that “SMEs contribute about 40% to the country’s GDP, thereby covering 55% of employment.” He noted the presence of approximately 120,000 active SMEs in Mauritius, highlighting their potential for growth in international markets. In his remarks, he pointed to the rapid increase in service exports to Africa, particularly in banking and medical sectors, affirming the continent’s promise for service-related industries. Furthermore, Ms. Amanda Serumaga, UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, emphasized the wealth of opportunities that Africa offers for innovation and entrepreneurship. She remarked, “Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, resources, and innovative spirit, is swiftly emerging as a global hub for entrepreneurship.” Ms. Serumaga acknowledged the barriers that persist for many entrepreneurs in exporting their products and services, advocating for a focused effort toward capacity building to unlock the potential of African entrepreneurs.
