Libya Denies Claims of Resettling Undocumented Immigrants

Libya’s Government of National Unity has denied misleading reports about resettling undocumented immigrants, emphasizing the claims are false. The GNU reiterated its rejection of such plans and its commitment to collaboration with the EU and international partners to address illegal immigration while respecting human rights. Prime Minister Dbeibah also affirmed support for UN efforts to stabilize Libya during a recent meeting with a UN representative.

On March 10, the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Libya strongly rejected claims that the country intends to resettle undocumented immigrants. The GNU described these reports as “misleading” and “completely false” in an official statement. This clarification follows social media assertions attributed to Minister of Local Governance Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi regarding immigrant settlement plans, which emerged after his recent meeting in Tripoli with Nicoletta Giordano, the chief of the International Organization for Migration mission in Libya.

The GNU reiterated its steadfast rejection of immigration resettlement, recalling its firm stance during the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum held in July 2024. The Libyan government emphasized its commitment to cooperating with the European Union and international partners to combat illegal immigration while upholding national sovereignty and human rights. Libya has experienced increased immigration flow since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, becoming a major departure point for African immigrants aiming to reach Europe.

In February, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah reaffirmed his government’s support for United Nations initiatives aimed at stabilizing Libya during a meeting with Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, the newly-appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya. The meeting marked Tetteh’s first official engagement after assuming her duties, underscoring the GNU’s focus on reinforcing international collaboration for stability in the region.

In conclusion, Libya’s Government of National Unity has firmly denied allegations of plans for resettling undocumented immigrants, asserting these claims are false and misleading. The GNU maintains its dedication to addressing illegal immigration while respecting human rights and sovereignty. Furthermore, the government’s collaboration with international organizations continues to focus on enhancing stability within Libya, showcasing its commitment to international partnerships in migration management.
