Escalation in South Lebanon: Hezbollah Shifts Blame Amid Israeli Strikes

South Lebanon faces unprecedented Israeli airstrikes, targeting Hezbollah operatives and military sites, as Hezbollah shifts blame onto the Lebanese government for the ongoing conflict. This strategy seeks to avoid internal criticism while exposing the state’s accountability regarding Israeli actions. Key inquiries remain regarding the government’s role and U.S. involvement in the situation.

In recent weeks, South Lebanon has experienced significant Israeli military action, marking the most intense airstrikes since the expiration of the Feb. 18 Israeli withdrawal deadline. Notably, a drone strike targeted a Hezbollah operative responsible for rebuilding terrorism-related infrastructure, resulting in one fatality and one injury, according to Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee. He stated that operations to eliminate such threats will persist.

Israeli warplanes have been actively conducting operations in southern regions, including Nabatieh and Iqlim al-Tuffah, following extensive airstrikes on Friday that affected towns like Mount Rihan and Sidon. The strikes targeted Hezbollah military sites, uncovering missiles storage and launch facilities deemed a threat to Israel’s security.

Hezbollah has opted for a policy of “military silence,” directing blame towards the Lebanese government. This position has been reinforced by MP Hussein Hajj Hassan, highlighting a shift in accountability. Riad Kahwaji from the Middle East and Gulf Military Analysis Center explained that this evasion strategy is an attempt by Hezbollah to mitigate criticism regarding its controversial military tactics which have led Lebanon into turmoil.

Kahwaji suggested that Hezbollah’s focus is now on deflecting responsibilities onto the Lebanese state for reconstruction efforts, while hoping to secure Iranian financial support to sustain its military tactics. During a recent event, MP Hajj Hassan reiterated the importance of addressing the public’s inquiries regarding Israel’s ongoing occupation and the country’s strategic response amid perceived American complicity with Israeli actions.

He called for government accountability, urging the Lebanese leadership to confront critical issues stemming from the occupation, including potential avenues for addressing U.S. negligence in the face of Israeli aggression.

The ongoing hostilities in South Lebanon have intensified with Israeli airstrikes aimed at disrupting Hezbollah’s military activities. Hezbollah’s decision to blame the Lebanese government reflects a tactical shift intended to mitigate backlash from its supporters. Nevertheless, pressing concerns remain regarding the accountability of the Lebanese state and the broader implications of U.S. involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Lebanese government’s response will be crucial in addressing public queries and garnering support in light of these escalating tensions.
