Qatar is urging the international community for enhanced oversight of Israel’s nuclear capabilities through the IAEA, demanding Israel’s adherence to the NPT. This initiative follows criticism of Israel’s military actions and humanitarian aid disruptions in Palestinian regions, alongside a formal request for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s obligations to international organizations.
In an ongoing negotiation for a cease-fire, Qatar is advocating for international oversight of Israel’s nuclear facilities through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). During a recent IAEA Board of Governors meeting, held in Vienna, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the necessity for Israel to adhere to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Qatar’s ambassador to Austria, Jassim Yacoub Al-Hammadi, highlighted the urgent need for Israel to bring its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. He remarked that international entities must fulfill their obligations as outlined in UN Security Council resolutions and previous agreements, which specifically call for Israel’s compliance.
Al-Hammadi pointed out that every country in the Middle East, with the exception of Israel, is a party to the NPT and has established safeguard agreements with the IAEA. He criticized Israel for its aggressive policies that include intensified military actions against Palestinian populations and the disruption of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Additionally, Qatar recently submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice seeking an advisory opinion about Israel’s obligations towards UN and international organizations. The memorandum asserts that Israel must facilitate the operations of various humanitarian entities, particularly in Palestinian territories, and respect their properties.
Furthermore, Al-Hammadi urged the international community to take decisive measures to pressure Israel into compliance with international resolutions. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the Palestinian rights to self-determination and the necessity for restoring stability in the Middle East, thereby mitigating broader global risks.
Qatar’s persistent demand for international oversight of Israel’s nuclear facilities underscores the broader challenges in Middle East diplomacy. By advocating for international adherence to established agreements, including the NPT, Qatar aims to address regional security issues while asserting the rights of the Palestinian people. The call for compliance with humanitarian aid facilitation further highlights the complexity of relieving tensions in the region.
