The United Nations in Uganda has initiated a joint emergency appeal to secure funding for a comprehensive USD 11.2 million response plan spanning three months, from March to May 2025. This initiative is aimed at bolstering national efforts against the Ebola virus disease, which was first detected in Uganda in January 2025. Mr. Leonard Zulu, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, expressed hope that the appeal would meet its financial target, having already mobilized USD 4.6 million through repurposing by UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).
The response strategy will prioritize seven high-risk districts, with potential extensions to others as required by the evolving situation. WHO Representative Dr. Kasonde Mwinga highlighted the urgency of containing the outbreak and mitigating its effects on public health and the socio-economic conditions of those impacted.
As of March 3, 2025, there are ten confirmed cases of Ebola, which include two fatalities. Alarmingly, five of the confirmed cases are health workers, while four are relatives of the initial case. In total, authorities are monitoring 299 individuals in contact with these cases, with further investigations ongoing to trace contacts of the most recent case.
