UN Helicopter Attack in South Sudan: Crew Member Killed, Tensions Escalate

A UN helicopter evacuation in South Sudan was attacked, resulting in one crew member’s death and injuries to others, alongside fatalities among SSPDF personnel. UNMISS condemned the attack, which escalates existing tensions in South Sudan, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts led by Kenyan President William Ruto to mediate between South Sudan’s leaders.

On March 7, 2025, a United Nations helicopter engaged in a humanitarian evacuation mission in Nasir, Upper Nile State, was subjected to an attack that resulted in the death of a crew member and severe injuries to two others. The assault also claimed the lives of several personnel from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), including a General who was being evacuated due to injuries.

The helicopter, operated by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), was tasked with an evacuation at the request of all parties involved, aiming to de-escalate tensions following recent confrontations between the SSPDF and armed youth. The ongoing conflict has caused substantial casualties and mass displacement of civilians in the area.

Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, condemned the attack as “abhorrent” and a potential war crime under international law, expressing deep sorrow over the casualties. He stated, “We deeply regret the tragic loss of our colleague and express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.” Haysom also emphasized the need for an investigation into the incident, urging accountability for those responsible.

The mission has reiterated its call for all parties to cease further violence and has urged South Sudan’s leaders to engage in dialogue to avert further escalation. The attack occurs during a period of intensified political and military tensions in South Sudan.

The Nasir region has become increasingly unstable following clashes between the SSPDF and the White Army, which comprises a coalition of Nuer youth fighters. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) is covertly supporting this faction, leading to the arrest of SPLA-IO’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, and Petroleum Minister, Puot Kang.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Kenyan President William Ruto is mediating discussions between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar. He urged both leaders to pursue dialogue to promote peace and stabilize the region amid the renewed violence. Ruto stated, “I implored both leaders to engage in dialogue towards fostering peace in the country even as the region works towards the stabilization of South Sudan under IGAD’s Strategic Framework.”

The attack on the UNMISS helicopter is anticipated to exacerbate the challenges facing South Sudan’s fragile peace process, raising concerns about the commitment of various factions to the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

This tragic incident underscores the volatile situation in South Sudan, marked by political and military tensions. The attack on the UN helicopter not only highlights the risks faced by humanitarian missions but also calls into question the commitment of political factions to peace. As diplomatic efforts continue, it remains imperative for South Sudanese leaders to prioritize dialogue to restore stability and security for all citizens.
