Safaricom has launched a new Tier 3+ data centre in Limuru, enhancing digital resilience, enabling seamless transactions, and complying with data security regulations. Safaricom has inaugurated a new Tier 3+ data centre in Limuru, enhancing digital resilience in Kenya. This facility ensures high uptime and compliance with data security regulations, thus facilitating seamless transactions and connectivity for customers. Situated in the chilly hills of Redhill, it aims to provide uninterrupted service in an era where digital communication is indispensable.

The Limuru Data Centre is one of three planned facilities, with the first phase now complete. Safaricom’s Program Manager, Maxwell Ndei, commended the collective effort of the team involved, highlighting the human dedication behind the project’s success. He noted that it required long hours and collaborative meetings to overcome challenges and evolve stronger.

A data centre serves as a critical infrastructure for housing applications and data. With the new facility, Principal Engineer Joshua Ogoti emphasized that customers will experience improved service reliability for transactions, particularly on platforms like M-PESA, which will now handle a greater volume of transactions seamlessly. The automation features enable customers to manage inquiries and receive feedback promptly.

The Uptime Institute ranks data centres into tiers based on their reliability, with Tier 3+ providing an impressive uptime of 99.982%. The infrastructure can support high-capacity racks, meeting the standards of major hyperscalers.

Esther Karuga, Senior Manager of the Limuru Data Center, expressed confidence in their world-class status, stating that they adhere to best practices and industry standards, competitive with global giants like Google and Microsoft.
