Pakistan has been ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 due to a substantial increase in terror attacks and civilian casualties. The report from the Institute of Economics and Peace highlights a 45% rise in attacks in 2024, with TTP being the deadliest group, responsible for 52% of the deaths. The provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are notably affected, accounting for the majority of incidents.
On March 6, the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) for 2025 revealed that Pakistan has risen to the second position due to an alarming increase in terror attacks and civilian casualties. This index, compiled by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses 163 countries, representing over 99.7% of the global population, using indicators such as the frequency of terrorist incidents, casualties, and their broader impact.
The report indicates a steady rise in terrorism-related fatalities in Pakistan over the past five years. Most notably, the country witnessed a staggering 45% increase in terrorist attacks in 2024 compared to previous years, with incidents jumping from 517 in 2023 to 1,099, marking the first time these attacks surpassed the 1,000 mark since the GTI’s inception.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has been identified as the fastest-growing and deadliest terrorist organization within the nation, inflicting a 90% increase in deaths attributed to their actions. In 2024, the TTP executed 482 attacks, resulting in 585 fatalities, a significant rise from the 293 deaths reported in the prior year.
The TTP accounted for 52% of Pakistan’s terrorism-related deaths in 2024, correlating with a surge in terrorist activities following the Taliban’s ascendance in Afghanistan. Groups operating from Afghanistan have escalated their assaults, particularly along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Notably, the Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces are the most severely impacted, encompassing over 96% of the terrorist attacks and deaths recorded in Pakistan during 2024.
The findings of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) for 2025 underscore a significant deterioration in Pakistan’s security landscape, primarily driven by the TTP’s escalating violence. With a marked increase in terror incidents and a troubling rise in civilian casualties, the situation necessitates urgent attention to enhance counter-terrorism measures and stabilize affected regions.
