Morocco’s Ministry of Health has reported a continued reduction in measles cases, known locally as “Bouhmroun”, marking the fifth consecutive week of decline. The ministry attributes this positive trend to ongoing efforts aimed at curbing the disease’s spread. In the week spanning February 24 to March 2, new cases fell by 13%, bringing the total to 2,481 confirmed instances as compared to the prior week’s 2,863 cases, which also showed a 14.9% decrease.
The improvement is credited to the dedication of healthcare professionals throughout the country, effective collaboration among stakeholders, and heightened community participation in vaccination campaigns under the national status verification initiative. Moreover, the Ministry has decided to extend the vaccination campaign until March 28 to guarantee that all families receive necessary vaccines.
Despite the encouraging decrease in cases, the Ministry stressed the importance of remaining vigilant, especially considering the low vaccination coverage observed in certain provinces. It urged citizens to participate actively in national efforts against measles and emphasized vaccination as a crucial preventive measure against the disease and its complications.
Health Minister Amine Tahraoui indicated that Morocco recorded a total of 19,515 Bouhmroun cases since October 2023. He also reported that the disease has led to 107 fatalities, which represents 0.55% of reported cases. Notably, the minister pointed out that a significant proportion of these deaths involved children under the age of 12, highlighting their vulnerability to the disease.
