Sudan’s El Burhan Affirms Readiness to Cease Hostilities Under Conditions

Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan of Sudan announced at the Arab Summit his readiness to cease fighting, contingent upon the withdrawal of the RSF. He emphasized support for Palestinian statehood and outlined a roadmap for Sudan’s political transition. El Burhan also highlighted achievements in restoring stability in areas previously occupied by the RSF and praised the backing of Arab nations.

On Tuesday, in his address to the Arab Summit in Cairo, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), expressed his readiness to cease hostilities under specific circumstances. El Burhan emphasized Sudan’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and backing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In his speech, El Burhan condemned any efforts to displace Palestinians from their land and reaffirmed Sudan’s support for Arab diplomatic initiatives that protect Palestinian rights. He indicated full backing for the Egyptian-Arab initiative to rebuild Gaza without displacing its current inhabitants.

Regarding Sudan’s internal situation, El Burhan mentioned ongoing efforts to stabilize regions previously occupied by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He reported that the SAF had successfully expelled these forces from significant territories and vowed to continue working to rid the country of them, while accusing the RSF of executing foreign agendas detrimental to Sudan.

El Burhan articulated conditions for an immediate cessation of military operations, contingent on the RSF’s withdrawal from occupied areas, the lifting of sieges on El Fasher and Darfur cities, and consolidation in designated areas for disarmament. He underscored the government’s roadmap for civil and constitutional reform, highlighting the formation of a civilian government and the initiation of inclusive dialogue leading to free elections.

He concluded by commending Arab countries for their support of Sudan’s unity and national institutions, while also acknowledging the role of the League of Arab States and its Secretary-General in promoting Sudan’s stability and national objectives. Radio Dabanga has reached out to the RSF for their perspective on El Burhan’s statements.

In summary, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan has extended a willingness to halt military hostilities under specific conditions, focusing on a withdrawal of RSF forces and a re-establishment of stability in Sudan. He has reaffirmed Sudan’s allegiance to the Palestinian quest for statehood and outlined a comprehensive roadmap for political reform aimed at fostering democratic governance. His remarks highlight a commitment to both national stability and regional solidarity, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue.
