Lebanon and Saudi Arabia Stress Strengthening Arab Cooperation on Key Issues

Lebanon and Saudi Arabia’s leaders reaffirm cooperation on key regional and international matters, focusing on implementing the Taif Agreement, supporting the Lebanese Army, and resolving export challenges. Discussions included enhancing travel for Saudi nationals to Lebanon and a positive invitation for a visit to Lebanon by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have emphasized the significance of strengthening Arab collaboration and aligning stances on crucial regional and international matters, as reported by the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA). This reaffirmation was made in a joint statement after a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. The statement highlights both nations’ dedication to the full implementation of the Taif Agreement and relevant international resolutions, promoting Lebanon’s state sovereignty and control over all territory, along with exclusive state weapon ownership.

The Taif Agreement, which was brokered in Saudi Arabia in 1989, marked the conclusion of Lebanon’s fifteen-year civil war and re-established governmental authority in the southern regions. Both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia underscored the vital role of the Lebanese Army and the necessity for its support, accompanied by a call for the total withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese land, as conveyed by Xinhua news agency.

Despite the ceasefire agreement established on November 27, 2024, which mandates Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanese territory, Israel continues to hold positions along the border despite a stipulated deadline from February 18. Furthermore, during the discussions between Aoun and the Crown Prince, they explored avenues for enhanced cooperation, including addressing hurdles preventing the resumption of Lebanese exports to Saudi Arabia and facilitating travel for Saudi citizens to Lebanon.

President Aoun extended an invitation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to visit Lebanon, which was received positively and appreciatively, according to the NNA.

In summary, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Arab cooperation on pivotal issues, particularly regarding regional security and sovereignty. Their discussions highlighted crucial areas such as the support of the Lebanese Army and the implementation of international resolutions, notably the Taif Agreement. Furthermore, both countries expressed a desire to advance economic ties and facilitate travel between their nations, indicating a pathway forward in bilateral relations.
