Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero urged investors at the Peru Day event to focus on integrating mining operations within local communities to ensure the sector’s sustainability. He highlighted the importance of valuing strategic minerals and discussed advancements in mining projects during meetings with Nexa Resources and Mongolia’s Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources.

In a recent address at the Peru Day event, Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero urged investors to prioritize the integration of mining operations within local territories to promote sustainability in the mining sector. Presenting to an international audience, he emphasized the necessity of replicating successful models akin to those in British Columbia, Canada. He remarked on the importance of enhancing the value of strategic minerals through investments in Peru’s metallurgical sector, particularly in polymetallic and copper concentrates.

During his meeting with Nexa Resources executives, Minister Montero discussed advances in assimilating El Porvenir and Atacocha mining operations in the Pasco region. The executives also shared insights regarding the extension of the Cerro Lindo mining unit’s operational lifespan, which currently employs a seawater pumping and desalination system over a distance of 60 kilometers. The Minister commended the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices.

Furthermore, Minister Montero engaged with Tsevegdorj Tuvaan, the head of Mongolia’s Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources, who expressed an interest in Peru’s mining sector and its investment potential. “The future is seawater desalination to prevent companies from coming into conflict with communities. The mining sector needs a territorial perspective,” Montero stated. He extended an invitation for increased investment opportunities from Mongolia and mentioned the potential for a delegation of Peruvian mining business leaders to explore opportunities in Mongolia.

In conclusion, Minister Jorge Montero’s emphasis on the integration of mining operations underscores a strategic vision for sustainable mining in Peru. His discussions with industry leaders and international counterparts reflect Peru’s readiness to attract foreign investment while ensuring environmental stewardship and community collaboration within the mining sector.
