On March 4, 2025, Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi to participate in the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, this visit is expected to significantly bolster the already strong and evolving relationship between India and Guyana in various sectors, particularly sustainable development and renewable energy.
The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) is scheduled from March 5 to 7, with the theme ‘Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions’. This annual event is organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and serves as a crucial platform for multistakeholder dialogue on sustainable development initiatives.
In February, Guyana’s Health Minister Frank Anthony expressed profound gratitude to India for its prompt aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for its vital vaccine donations that contributed to saving lives in Guyana. He noted that India’s commitment to share vaccines amid its own struggles demonstrated exceptional solidarity during a challenging time.
Anthony remarked, “The vaccines that we receive from India helped us to save many lives because at a point, although we were looking all over the world to get vaccines, it wasn’t possible because nobody was willing to sell us,” emphasizing the importance of Indian support when other nations were unresponsive.
He also acknowledged India’s leadership in health care, expressing aspiration for Guyana to replicate some of India’s healthcare advancements. Anthony highlighted the sophistication of India’s healthcare system, indicating a desire for Guyana to integrate similar practices within its own healthcare framework.
The Health Minister recalled the visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Guyana, noting that these interactions have notably reinforced the diplomatic ties. He stated, “Their presence and visit helped to further strengthen our relationship,” referencing the notable agreements signed during these official visits, particularly in the health sector.
The arrival of Prime Minister Mark Phillips in India signifies a pivotal moment in strengthening the bilateral relationship between Guyana and India, particularly in terms of sustainable development and health collaboration. The expressed gratitude for India’s support during the pandemic underscores the commitment both nations share towards enhancing cooperative frameworks. Furthermore, the upcoming World Sustainable Development Summit presents an opportunity for further dialogue on critical environmental issues.
