Rigathi Gachagua has declared that the GEMA communities will be crucial in forming Kenya’s next government, projecting confidence in their political influence. He criticized President Ruto’s reliance on Raila Odinga’s support, asserting that GEMA unity will secure electoral success in 2027. Gachagua aims to form a strong opposition coalition while emphasizing the importance of the Gen Z voter base in future elections.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asserted that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will play a pivotal role in determining Kenya’s next government, irrespective of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s involvement. While addressing attendees at a church service in Machakos, Gachagua expressed a strong belief in GEMA’s potential to influence the country’s political trajectory significantly.
Gachagua proclaimed, “GEMA ndiyo dawa ya Kenya. GEMA itaunda the next government,” emphasizing that the unity of GEMA communities is crucial for ensuring political superiority. He conveyed confidence in their substantial numbers, which he believes will guarantee a successful outcome in the 2027 general elections, stating, “We have looked at the numbers and they are good, with or without him (Raila).”
Moreover, Gachagua vocally criticized President William Ruto, suggesting that Ruto’s political viability currently relies on Odinga’s influence, asserting, “Life support machine ya Ruto ni Raila saa hii. Akizima, amekwisha.” He forecasted a challenging re-election campaign for Ruto in 2027, predicting that Ruto might place third or fourth in the upcoming elections.
Gachagua also asserted that if the GEMA communities maintain their unity, they could hold a dominant position in Kenyan leadership for the next century, declaring, “If we unite as GEMA, we shall be in power for the next 100 years.”
His statements arise amid increasing speculation regarding his political future and recent engagements with figures from the opposition. He recently hinted at a willingness to collaborate with Odinga to challenge President Ruto’s authority. Gachagua criticized current political circumstances, viewing Odinga’s alliance with Ruto as a betrayal of opposition values.
In an interview, he conveyed confusion regarding Odinga’s intentions, noting, “I do not understand Raila’s intentions; it is his choice whether he wants to be with Ruto and water down his political legacy or join the side of liberating this country.” Gachagua further indicated that the Gen Z demographic, critical in previous elections, would not support Ruto, asserting that the populace desires a government prioritizing their interests.
To solidify an opposition coalition, Gachagua has engaged in discussions with various political leaders, such as Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party, Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party, and Eugene Wamalwa of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya. These efforts signal a significant shift in the political dynamics of Kenya as the 2027 elections approach.
Rigathi Gachagua’s assertions reveal a strong determination to leverage the GEMA communities’ unity for political strength in the upcoming elections. His open criticisms of President Ruto and willingness to engage with opposition figures underscore a dynamic and shifting political landscape leading up to 2027. Gachagua’s emphasis on the importance of Gen Z voters reflects an awareness of changing political sentiments among the electorate.
