In his communication with Rep. Yu, Ri articulated his aspirations, asking whether he could enjoy personal freedoms and rights in South Korea. He specifically inquired, “If I go to (South) Korea, will I be able to live as I wish with the rights I hope for?” His wounds, which affected his jaw and arm, necessitated surgery to enable him to speak clearly.
Ri reiterated his intention to move to South Korea in a recent interview with the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, leading the South Korean government to express a willingness to offer protection and support should he decide to make the journey. In contrast, another captured soldier, identified as Paek, indicated he required more time to contemplate defection.
When questioned regarding the fate of North Korean soldiers captured in warfare, Paek noted their inclination to consider self-destruction instead of capture, stating, “I have seen it many times… I myself had a grenade for self-destruction,” highlighting the belief among soldiers that capture signifies betrayal to their homeland.
Rep. Yu urged that diplomatic efforts be made to prevent the forced repatriation of North Korean soldiers who are taken prisoner in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for humane treatment and consideration of their circumstances.
