On Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani honored Dr. Mohammed Taher Abu Ragheef, a British-Iraqi surgeon, for his exceptional medical contributions in Gaza. An official statement reported that Ayatollah Al-Sistani met with Dr. Abu Ragheef and listened to his accounts detailing the severe healthcare crisis in the conflict-ridden region. The Ayatollah expressed profound gratitude for the doctor’s unwavering dedication and offered prayers for his future success.
Dr. Abu Ragheef, born in Najaf in the 1980s, relocated to the United Kingdom with his family, where he specialized in trauma surgery, upper limb reconstruction, and peripheral nerve surgery. In early 2024, he joined the “Fajr Scientific” medical delegation, volunteering his expertise in Gaza’s struggling hospitals. Over the span of six months, he successfully performed more than 300 intricate surgeries and provided care for over 1,200 injured individuals, despite facing critical shortages in medical supplies.
One of his most notable achievements included reattaching the severed arm of a nine-year-old girl who lost it during an Israeli airstrike on Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. On January 25, 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani acknowledged Abu Ragheef’s humanitarian efforts, referring to him as a “humanitarian ambassador.” Following this commendation, Dr. Abu Ragheef visited Iraq upon an official invitation from the Prime Minister and received a warm welcome.
