Ethiopian Delegation Attends First BRICS Sherpas/Sous Sherpas Meeting

Ethiopia’s delegation, led by BRICS Sherpa Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, is attending the First Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas for 2025 in Brasilia. Mamo stressed Ethiopia’s commitment to multilateralism and highlighted key priorities for 2025, including membership in the New Development Bank. An Ethiopian delegation, headed by Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, Governor of the National Bank and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sherpa, is currently attending the inaugural Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas for 2025 in Brasilia, Brazil. Joined by Ambassador Mesganu Arga, State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ethiopia’s Sous Sherpa, the meeting commenced with an address by Mauro Viera, Brazil’s Minister of External Affairs.

During the meeting, Mamo emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to multilateralism and collective security guided by the United Nations’ framework. He articulated the necessity for a reformed global system capable of addressing complex global issues effectively. He also highlighted Ethiopia’s ambition to achieve membership in the New Development Bank as a key priority for 2025.

Further, the Sherpa called for enhanced economic cooperation among BRICS nations and underscored the importance of fulfilling foundational goals and initiatives within the BRICS structure. Ethiopia expressed its support for Brazil’s 2025 Presidency, which focuses on six strategic priorities: global health, reform of global governance, climate finance, governance of artificial intelligence, cooperation among the Global South, and the development of BRICS institutions. The meeting is scheduled to discuss various agenda items over the course of two days.
