The President of the DRC is proposing a security deal with President Trump that connects the country’s rich mineral resources to military support, following similar arrangements with Ukraine. This proposal also calls for ethical sourcing from beyond Rwanda, promoting direct trade with the DRC, aimed at combating illegal smuggling and the violence that accompanies it.
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is a significant supplier of critical minerals globally, is proposing to President Donald Trump a security partnership related to their raw materials. This initiative mirrors a similar agreement being developed concerning Ukraine.
“President Tshisekedi invites the USA, whose companies source strategic raw materials from Rwanda, materials that are looted from the DRC and smuggled to Rwanda while our populations are massacred, to purchase them directly from us the rightful owners,” stated Tina Salama, the spokesperson for President Tshisekedi.
The DRC is characterized by its extensive mining activities that yield essential minerals, including copper, diamonds, tantalum, tin, gold, and more than seventy percent of the globe’s cobalt production. Salama further emphasized that this offer is not solely for the United States, but is also directed towards the European Union.
“And it’s not just for the USA. The offer is also extended to Europeans and to all parties involved in sourcing smuggled, blood-stained raw materials from Rwanda,” Salama noted, highlighting the broader implications of this proposal.
In summary, the Democratic Republic of Congo is seeking to establish a strategic partnership with the United States regarding its rich mineral resources, while also urging the international community to consider ethical sourcing. The DRC’s President invites global stakeholders to engage directly with the nation to help combat the ongoing issues related to the illegal extraction of valuable resources related to violence and corruption.
