A specialized surgical team from Saudi Arabia successfully separated conjoined twins, Hawaa and Khadijah, from Burkina Faso at the King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh. The intricate procedure lasted six hours and was divided into five stages, engaging 26 medical professionals from diverse fields including anesthesia, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery.

Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, the Royal Court Advisor and Supervisor-General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, led this multidisciplinary team. He indicated that the surgery began on schedule, with a smooth anesthesia phase and effective sterilization and incision processes.

The most critical part of the procedure, which involved separating the pericardium and liver, was executed successfully with minimal blood loss. Dr. Al Rabeeah noted that this operation highlights both the advanced medical technology in Saudi Arabia and the surgical team’s extensive expertise.

This surgery represents the 62nd operation carried out under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, a humanitarian initiative endorsed by the Kingdom’s leadership. Over 36 years, the program has cared for 146 conjoined twins from 27 different nations, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to global humanitarian medical efforts.

Dr. Al Rabeeah conveyed his gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for their ongoing support of this initiative.
