They welcomed Venezuela’s recent legal submissions regarding territorial disputes and emphasized the importance of Resolution through the International Court of Justice.
At the recent 48th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, members expressed serious concerns regarding statements from Venezuela. These included a declaration by the President of Venezuela and the Chairman of the National Electoral Council, announcing plans for elections in the Essequibo region of Guyana. Such actions, they asserted, violate international law and go against agreements between the two nations.
The Heads of Government firmly articulated that any attempt by Venezuela to conduct elections or intrude upon Guyana’s territory would breach established international legal principles. They categorically called on Venezuela to refrain from taking any actions that would undermine Guyana’s sovereignty.
In a separate incident, a group of armed men from Venezuela attacked members of the Guyana Defence Force along the border, an act that was roundly condemned by CARICOM leaders. They reiterated their support for Guyana and its rightful claims to territorial integrity amid these provocations.
CARICOM representatives acknowledged the submission of Venezuela’s counter-memorial regarding the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award that defined the territorial boundaries between the two countries. They encouraged Venezuela to adhere to the Court’s schedule and submit its Rejoinder in August 2025.
In conclusion, CARICOM leaders have reiterated their staunch support for Guyana’s territorial integrity in light of Venezuela’s provocative actions and statements regarding the Essequibo region. They emphasized adherence to international law and the importance of resolving the dispute through judicial means. The unity among CARICOM members underscores a collective commitment to peaceful resolution and respect for sovereign rights.
