Mozambique: INAM Forecasts Potential Cyclone Formation Honde and Garance

INAM predicts the formation of two tropical cyclones, Honde and Garance, impacting the Mozambique Channel. Honde, moving southward, may develop into a stronger system, causing increased rainfall in parts of Mozambique. Garance, however, poses no threat as it is moving east, away from Madagascar. Precautionary measures for maritime safety are recommended due to these systems.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) forecasts the possible formation of two tropical cyclones, named Honde and Garance, between Thursday and Friday, affecting southern and eastern Madagascar. These systems are expected to produce strong winds within the Mozambique Channel. Currently, Moderate Tropical Storm Honde is situated approximately 250 km off Inhambane province’s coast and is transitioning southward towards Madagascar.

Forecasts suggest that as Storm Honde progresses, it may develop into a full tropical cyclone by Friday, generating strong winds and producing light to moderate rainfall, with localized heavy showers in parts of Mozambique. Meteorologist Lelo Tayob noted, “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain.”

On the other hand, Tropical Storm Garance is located east of Madagascar and is also anticipated to become a tropical cyclone. However, it poses no imminent threat to Mozambique, as it is moving away from Madagascar. Tayob stated, “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.”

Given the evolving situation, INAM emphasizes the importance of taking precautionary measures, particularly regarding maritime navigation, to ensure safety during these weather events.

Overall, the potential cyclones, Honde and Garance, may influence weather patterns in Mozambique primarily through generated rains, with Honde carrying a higher possibility of developing into a significant weather event. The meteorological authority advises vigilance, especially for those involved in maritime activities, due to the anticipated impacts from the systems at sea.

In summary, the forecast from INAM highlights the potential formations of tropical cyclones Honde and Garance, their expected developments, and their limited direct impacts on Mozambique. While Honde is poised to bring rain and strong winds to the Mozambique Channel, Garance is expected to move away without significant repercussions. INAM advises caution in maritime operations to maintain safety during these weather phenomena.
