Chile Sends Super Puma Helicopter to Support Argentinian Wildfires

Chile’s National Forest Corporation dispatched an AS332 Super Puma helicopter to assist in combating major wildfires in Argentina’s Patagonia region, specifically in Neuquén province. The helicopter can drop 3,500 liters of water and will operate for at least 14 days, responding to extensive damage to forests exacerbated by extreme weather conditions. This action showcases regional cooperation against environmental emergencies.

Chile’s National Forest Corporation (CONAF) has deployed an AS332 Super Puma helicopter to aid firefighting operations in Argentina’s Patagonia region. This aircraft, registered as ZT-RYC, will be operated by Ecocopter+Helisul, with the capability to release up to 3,500 liters of water at once. It is set to operate primarily in the province of Neuquén for a minimum duration of 14 days.

This deployment comes in response to a significant wildfire crisis that has ravaged over 34,000 hectares of forest, including more than 12,000 hectares within the Nahuel Huapi National Park in Río Negro and 22,000 hectares in the Lanín National Park in Neuquén. The ongoing situation has been exacerbated by high temperatures and strong wind conditions, increasing the urgency for firefighting assistance.

Francisco Arriagada, the Commercial Manager of Ecocopter+Helisul, expressed his concern regarding the severity of the fires in Argentine Patagonia, stating the commitment to protect the ecosystem. “We are committed to protecting people, communities and the environment, which is why we have made the Super Puma and all our experience available to fight the fires,” he remarked. This initiative highlights regional collaboration between Chilean and Argentine firefighting efforts.

Helisul and Ecocopter merged in May of the previous year to strengthen their operational capabilities. The cooperation between the two companies signifies a collective commitment to addressing environmental challenges and supporting communities affected by natural disasters such as wildfires.

The dispatching of the Super Puma helicopter by Chile’s CONAF signifies a critical collaborative effort between Chile and Argentina in combating the devastating wildfires affecting Patagonia. With substantial resources allocated and a firm commitment to protecting the region’s environment, this initiative demonstrates the proactive steps being taken to mitigate the impact of such disasters. The coordinated response exemplifies the shared responsibility of neighboring nations in the face of environmental crises.
