In December 2023, Qatar commuted the sentences of eight Indian naval veterans, reversing death sentences to prison terms. Two veterans have appealed to Prime Minister Modi and Qatar’s Amir for the release of Commander Purnendu Tiwari, who remains detained due to a travel ban. The veterans stress the importance of resolving this issue swiftly to reunite Tiwari with his family amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts.
In December 2023, the Court of Appeal in Qatar commuted the death sentences of eight Indian naval veterans to prison terms ranging from three to 25 years. Among these veterans, two, Captains Navtej Gill and Saurabh Vasisht, regained their freedom and returned to New Delhi on February 11, 2024, after extensive negotiations. They have now appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, to facilitate the return of their colleague, Commander Purnendu Tiwari (retd), who remains detained due to a travel ban.
The appeal coincides with Amir Al-Thani’s state visit to India. The veterans emphasized the importance of resolving Tiwari’s situation, allowing him to reunite with his family, particularly his elderly mother. “One year has passed since Qatar released eight decorated Indian Navy personnel but one of them remains there due to a travel ban,” noted Gupta and Pakala in their statement. The group was held for 17 months on undisclosed charges, highlighting the recommendation for closer diplomatic engagement.
The veterans had distinguished careers within the Indian Navy, with Gill receiving a President’s gold medal and serving as an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College. Tiwari, recognized with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, is a notable figure in the community. Gupta described his 17-month ordeal as “horrendous,” recounting extreme challenges and drawing strength from reading and practicing meditation during his imprisonment.
The circumstances surrounding the detention of Indian nationals in Qatar have raised significant concerns regarding diplomatic relations and the protection of overseas personnel. The veterans continue to seek a resolution, urging both the Indian and Qatari leaderships to address Tiwari’s ongoing predicament swiftly. Their collective experience highlights broader implications for Indian citizens employed abroad and underscores the need for effective diplomatic intervention where necessary.
The ongoing situation involving Commander Purnendu Tiwari emphasizes the complexity of international diplomacy and the necessity of protective measures for expatriates. The appeal by the returned veterans to both Indian Prime Minister Modi and Qatar’s Amir is a testament to their concern for a colleague stranded under dire circumstances. As diplomatic discussions advance, the hope remains for Tiwari’s prompt return to his family, showcasing the vital role of governmental negotiations in safeguarding citizens abroad.
