Notably, British-Iranian dual national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was previously transferred to Kerman following her arrest. The UK Foreign Office refrained from commenting on the recent developments, coinciding with the arrival of Iran’s new ambassador to the UK, Seyyed Ali Mousavi.
Amid these arrests, Iran has pressured the UK and European nations to disassociate from renewed U.S. economic sanctions, which could obstruct negotiations concerning its nuclear program. In a related context, Iran managed to secure the release of Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian exporter sought by the U.S. in connection to supplying materials for a drone attack in Jordan.
Abedini’s arrest in Milan on a U.S. warrant followed shortly after the Iranian authorities detained Italian journalist Cecilia Sala during her visit to Tehran. After three weeks in custody, Sala’s release was facilitated by the Italian government after Abedini was freed.
Furthermore, German authorities have confirmed the transfer of Jamshid Sharmehed, an Iranian-German political activist executed in an Iranian prison last November, to Germany for an autopsy. Following intensive diplomatic efforts, the German foreign ministry stated that negotiations for Sharmehed’s remains influenced its appeal to the Munich security conference regarding an invitation for Iran’s crown prince.
