5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Reported in Morocco Followed by Global Seismic Activity

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco on February 10, with previous significant tremors reported in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands. A tsunami warning was briefly issued for Mexico but later lifted. Following these events, minor earthquakes were documented in California and Alaska in the preceding days.

On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco, predominantly reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This seismic event was located near Chefchaouen at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). At the time of reporting, the USGS had documented about 420 accounts from individuals who felt the tremor.

The earthquake in Morocco followed shortly after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Vanuatu on the same day. Centered in Port-Vila, this earthquake struck at a depth of 18 kilometers (11.9 miles).

Additionally, preceding these events, a significant 7.6-magnitude earthquake was reported in the Cayman Islands on February 8, located in George Town at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). A tsunami warning was issued for the Mexican coastline during this sequence of tremors, but it was lifted after two hours, as confirmed by the USGS.

The National Weather Service Warning Center stated, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners. The tsunami threat has passed. Unusual currents may be noticed in some areas. Exercise normal caution.”

Prior to the reported earthquakes in Morocco, Vanuatu, and the Cayman Islands, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Petrolia, California on February 7, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). This was immediately preceded by a 2.9-magnitude earthquake in the same area on February 6, centered at a depth of 4.4 kilometers (2.7 miles).

Furthermore, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake shook Sustina, Alaska on February 5, occurring at a depth of 5.4 kilometers (3.4 miles).

In summary, a series of earthquakes has recently impacted diverse regions, including Morocco, Vanuatu, and the Cayman Islands. While approaching tremors resulted in a tsunami warning along the Mexican coastline, the threat has since been deemed to have passed, highlighting the importance of awareness regarding seismic activities.
