The agency called for accountability from the Kenyan government, noting a disturbing rise in abductions, particularly since the June 2024 protests led by the Generation Z movement against President William Ruto’s administration. The government has faced intensified scrutiny from the public due to numerous alleged abductions linked to security personnel.
One notable incident involved the abduction of Ugandan opposition figures Kizza Besigye and Obed Lutale in Nairobi’s Riverside region in November 2024. Both individuals were scheduled to face charges in Kampala shortly thereafter, showcasing the seriousness of these violations.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 82 abduction cases since June 2024, with 29 individuals still unaccounted for. Additionally, the organization pointed to prior incidents, including the arrest and deportation of 36 members of Uganda’s Forum for Democratic Change under terrorism accusations, despite their legal entry into Kenya.
In another alarming event, seven Turkish asylum seekers were abducted in Nairobi in October 2023, leading to the forcible return of four individuals to Turkey shortly afterward. These developments further highlight the severity and breadth of the abduction crisis in Kenya.
