Egypt and Jordan Urge Immediate Cessation of Israeli Military Aggression in Gaza and Lebanon

Egypt’s Badr Abdelatty and Jordan’s Ayman Safadi have called for an immediate end to Israeli military actions in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank, warning of the severe risks posed to regional safety. They condemned Israeli aggression, stressed the necessity of humanitarian aid, and supported Lebanon’s sovereignty amid ongoing violence and significant casualties.

Cairo – On October 3, 2024, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi jointly declared the urgent need to cease Israeli military actions in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. During their phone conversation addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon, the ministers warned that the escalating Israeli aggression could result in severe repercussions for regional safety and stability. They insisted on an immediate halt to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank, condemning the violence especially in Beirut. Both officials emphasized their commitment to support Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability and called for the implementation of UN Resolution No. 1701, which pertains to the deployment of Lebanese Armed Forces in Southern Lebanon. They highlighted the critical necessity of providing humanitarian aid to those displaced within Lebanon due to the continuing Israeli military actions.

The current conflict has resulted in extensive human suffering and loss of life, particularly among the Palestinian and Lebanese populations. Since the start of the Gaza war, Israel’s military operations have claimed more than 41,600 Palestinian lives and inflicted substantial casualties in Lebanon. The intensification of Israeli strikes, particularly against Hezbollah and perceived Houthi-aligned targets, poses significant concerns about potential regional escalation. Moreover, urgent international calls for a ceasefire have been met with persistent military activity, raising alarm over a broader conflict involving multiple state and non-state actors in the region.

In conclusion, the call by Egypt and Jordan for an immediate cessation of hostilities reflects the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and humanitarian intervention to prevent further escalation in the region. Both nations underscored their commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and the welfare of its people, while reiterating the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to uphold international law and ensure the protection of civilians.
