The Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin seeks guidance from Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission as it prepares for three major elections in 2026. CENA’s delegation, led by President Sacca Lafia, visited INEC to learn about electoral processes, legal frameworks, and operational strategies for managing simultaneous elections.
The Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin (CENA) has sought assistance from the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC) in preparation for the upcoming elections in 2026—specifically the legislative and local elections in January, followed by the presidential election in April. A delegation of twelve members, headed by CENA President Sacca Lafia, visited INEC to garner insights into Nigeria’s electoral processes, aiming to effectively manage its complex electoral schedule.
During their visit, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu confirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Benin’s electoral preparations. He stated, “For the first time in its history, CENA will be conducting three elections within a period of three months.” He elaborated on various aspects of Nigeria’s electoral framework, including the legal foundation, election materials, recruitment and training of poll officials, budgeting, security measures, and technology utilization, underscoring the importance of these elements in ensuring free and fair elections.
Lafia expressed gratitude for INEC’s warm reception, highlighting the significance of this study visit. “We are going to learn from Nigeria’s experience so that we can do well,” he affirmed, indicating the critical nature of their forthcoming electoral responsibilities.
As Benin prepares for its 2026 elections, it faces the unprecedented challenge of conducting three major elections in a consecutive three-month span. This situation necessitates precise planning and execution, prompting CENA to seek the expertise of INEC, which has extensive experience in managing elections in Nigeria, thereby emphasizing the need for international collaboration to enhance electoral integrity in the region.
The collaboration between Benin’s CENA and Nigeria’s INEC underscores a significant step towards strengthening electoral processes in West Africa. This partnership aims to ensure that Benin is adequately prepared for its upcoming elections by learning from Nigeria’s various electoral strategies and methodologies. The willingness of INEC to share its knowledge is a testament to the importance of regional solidarity in promoting democratic practices.
