This request was articulated by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during her closing remarks at the ministerial session of the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission held in Cape Town. Furthermore, Nigeria aimed to collaborate with South Africa on leadership roles concerning key topics during South Africa’s upcoming G20 presidency.
With South Africa having accepted the G20 presidency on December 1, 2023, Ojukwu emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional peace. She called upon South Africa to assist in amplifying the Sudanese peace process, recognizing the critical role it plays in enhancing stability in the region. Minister Ojukwu highlighted that President Bola Tinubu is actively engaged in the African Union’s mediation committee, prioritizing the resolution of the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
“We are dedicated to resolving the Sudan situation, and under this pretext, we request South Africa’s assistance in accelerating the peace process and ensuring that tensions in our region are de-escalated. With peace, we can aspire for better progress and development in all fields,” she stated. The two countries’ officials were commended for their collaborative efforts in preparing the draft statement that was discussed during the BNC ministerial session.
Dr. Roland Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, committed to elevating Africa’s voice throughout South Africa’s G20 presidency while acknowledging Nigeria’s aspirations during this significant diplomatic engagement. The agreed-upon minutes and communiqué from the session will subsequently be presented to Presidents Tinubu and Cyril Ramaphosa during the presidential meeting.
