Sudan Army Repels Attempted Assault by Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher

The Sudanese Armed Forces successfully repelled an attack by the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, North Darfur on Sunday. This clash caused many RSF casualties and was situated in the only major Darfur city still not controlled by the RSF. Violence in the area has escalated since May, resulting in significant civilian casualties and complications in an already severe humanitarian crisis.

In a significant development, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced that they successfully repelled an assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher early on Sunday. This clash reportedly resulted in numerous casualties among the RSF fighters and significant damage to their armored vehicles, as stated by the SAF’s 6th Infantry Division. El Fasher is a critical city, being the capital of North Darfur, and the last major city in the region not yet under RSF control.

El Fasher has witnessed escalating violence since early May, when conflict between the SAF and the RSF began to intensify over territorial control. While many tactical victories have occurred on both sides, the RSF has not publicly addressed this recent reported offensive. North Darfur Governor Al-Hafiz Bakhit reported that recent shelling by the RSF targeted a displacement shelter associated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, leading to the deaths of five civilians and injuring around 30 others.

The situation on the ground is alarming, as El Fasher remains the last significant stronghold against the RSF’s growing dominance in the region. The RSF’s strategic capture of the city would represent a meaningful advance in the ongoing conflict, which has engulfed Sudan since April 2023, following a violent power struggle between the SAF and RSF. This ongoing warfare has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and triggered a humanitarian crisis, displacing millions in the process.

The conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, with significant implications for the region’s stability. The SAF’s recent success in El Fasher highlights the ongoing struggle between the government forces and the RSF, while the humanitarian situation remains dire. As violence persists and casualties rise, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to this tragic conflict.
