UNDRR, alongside the Green Climate Fund and the West African Development Bank, hosted a Training of Trainers workshop in South Korea from April 8 to 11, 2025. The event aimed at strengthening Togo’s climate and disaster risk management capabilities through enhanced training of national stakeholders. Participants engaged with international experts and practical tools while focusing on disaster resilience strategies.
From April 8 to 11, 2025, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) collaborated with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the West African Development Bank (BOAD) to conduct a Training of Trainers workshop. This workshop, designed for national stakeholders from Togo, aimed to improve disaster risk management and climate adaptation strategies, particularly through the newly approved GCF project to enhance community resilience against climate risks.
Key representatives from Togo’s governmental institutions, such as the National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC) and the Togolese Meteorological Agency (ANAMET), participated in the event held in Incheon, South Korea. Sessions facilitated by experts from UNDRR, GCF, and leading international organizations focused on disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate information systems, and anticipatory actions, among other crucial topics that align with global frameworks like the Sendai Framework and the Paris Agreement.
The workshop incorporated practical tools to facilitate the implementation of the GCF project, including the Sendai Framework Monitor Custom Indicators and the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities. Participants were trained in collaborative strategies under the Early Warnings for All Initiative and were exposed to advanced practices, notably through a presentation by South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety, demonstrating an integrated disaster management system.
On the last day, participants engaged in a field visit to the Incheon Metropolitan City Safety Situation Division, where they observed integrated monitoring and real-time disaster response systems. This visit highlighted the use of technology and inter-agency collaboration in ensuring timely disaster alerts, which inspired attendees to enhance similar systems in Togo.
The workshop concluded with plans for national implementation of the SAP048 project, with participants affirming their commitment to applying newly acquired knowledge and reinforcing collaboration among stakeholders. The trained participants are poised to conduct future workshops for local stakeholders to further support the initiatives aimed at increasing climate resilience across vulnerable communities in Togo.
The collaboration among UNDRR, GCF, and BOAD in facilitating the workshop has set a foundation for significant advancements in climate resilience and disaster risk management in Togo. Through effective training, the key participants from Togo’s institutions are now better equipped to implement the GCF co-funded project, which aims to create robust early warning systems and disaster management frameworks. Moreover, the insights gained from practical demonstrations in South Korea serve as a catalyst for enhancing Togo’s disaster response capabilities, ultimately benefitting vulnerable communities.
