Solidarity Visit Strengthens Bonds Between Rwanda and DRC Dioceses

Bishop Sinayobye of Rwanda’s Diocese of Cyangugu led a solidarity visit to DRC’s Archdiocese of Bukavu, emphasizing the strong familial bonds between the communities amidst ongoing political conflict. The visit reinforced their commitment to peace and unity, as echoed by both bishops during their collaborative prayer service.

The recent pastoral visit from Rwanda’s Diocese of Cyangugu to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Archdiocese of Bukavu emphasizes the solidarity between the two communities amidst ongoing conflict. Bishop Sinayobye led the visit with five priests, aiming to strengthen cultural, spiritual, and fraternal ties between the dioceses. He described this relationship as one of brothers and sisters in faith.

During the visit, the Bishop asserted, “Despite the difficult situations that our countries are facing, we remain united in prayer, kindness, and positive actions towards each other as a people.” A significant part of the journey was a meeting with the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace staff in Bukavu, where the delegation received a warm welcome from Father Justin Nkunzi, the Commission’s Director.

Father Nkunzi highlighted the collaborative efforts between Cyangugu and Bukavu, stressing their critical role in promoting peace and reconciliation in a conflict-affected region. The visit also included a prayer session at Bukavu’s Cathedral, attended by Archbishop François-Xavier Maroy Rusengo and his personnel, reinforcing the unity of the dioceses.

Archbishop Rusengo expressed appreciation for the visit, emphasizing, “More than friends, we are brothers and sisters—both naturally and spiritually. Political borders should never divide the Church of Christ.” This visit falls in line with the initiatives of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC), encouraging the bishops to cultivate warm relationships that rise above political divides.

The solidarity visit between Rwanda’s Diocese of Cyangugu and DRC’s Archdiocese of Bukavu highlights the enduring relationships formed through shared faith. It serves as a testament to the commitment of church leaders to foster peace and reconciliation, prioritizing spiritual unity over political divisions. Through collective efforts, both dioceses aim to build a path toward harmony in a fractious region.
