This observation was made during a visit by a World Bank delegation, led by Country Director Ndiame Diop, to Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu.
In a presentation titled “Next Level Statistics to Support Nigeria’s Reform and Growth Agenda,” Practice Manager Johan Mistiaen pointed out the deficiencies in Nigeria’s statistical system. He recommended that an annual investment of $10 to $15 million in this area could enhance performance and bring Nigeria in line with its aspirational counterparts.
Minister Bagudu responded by affirming the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) operates independently. He acknowledged the Bureau’s role in producing reliable data for international organizations and emphasized that there would be no governmental interference in its operations. Additionally, he expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s ongoing financial and technical support.
Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, the Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the NBS, highlighted that increased investment in statistics is vital for national development. He praised the government for significantly boosting the Bureau’s budget, which is the highest in the past decade. Adeniran also expressed that with continued funding and partnerships, the NBS could achieve even greater outcomes.
