Deadly RSF Attack in Western Sudan Results in Over 45 Civilian Deaths

On March 23, 2025, over 45 civilians were killed in an attack by the RSF in Al-Malha, Sudan. Additional reports indicate mass executions and numerous injuries. The RSF’s takeover of the strategically significant region raises concerns about ongoing violence and ethnic-based killings in Darfur.

On March 23, 2025, in the Al-Malha area of western Sudan, over 45 civilians lost their lives due to an assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to local organizations. The attack, approximately 210 kilometers north of El Fasher, featured RSF fighters opening fire indiscriminately in markets and residential neighborhoods, resulting in numerous fatalities.

Additionally, the Sudanese Doctors Network reported via social media that the RSF conducted mass executions of 48 individuals in Al-Malha, with 63 more sustaining injuries. They cautioned that the ongoing ethnic-based mass killings perpetrated by the RSF against the people of Darfur would exacerbate the precarious situation in the region.

As for the RSF, they have not commented on the assault as of yet. Just prior to the attack, the RSF declared that they had taken control of Al-Malha, a strategically important area that contains a camp for armed Darfuri groups allied with the Sudanese army. Control of this region is crucial due to its position along essential trade routes connecting Sudan and Libya, and its significance as a junction leading to El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, has made it a focal point of intense conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF since May 10 of the previous year.

The recent attack by the RSF in Al-Malha resulted in significant civilian casualties, highlighting the ongoing violence and turmoil in western Sudan. The RSF’s control over critical regions raises concerns about future instability and human rights violations, particularly towards the ethnic communities in Darfur. Urgent international attention is needed to address the escalating conflict and protect vulnerable populations.
