Fierce battles in Sudan’s Khartoum continue as the SAF approaches the Republican Palace, with recent reports of civilian casualties and humanitarian issues arising from ongoing violence. The RSF maintains blockades in some areas, while the SAF claims victories in North Darfur. Reports highlight significant humanitarian impacts, including destroyed villages and the displacement of civilians.
In Sudan, intense battles are ongoing as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) advance towards the Republican Palace in Khartoum. This assault is part of an effort to regain control of Greater Khartoum, which was lost to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at the onset of conflict in April 2023. The SAF has approached within 500 meters of the palace after destroying an RSF convoy of 30 vehicles retreating south. Explosions and gunfire indicate the escalation of fighting in various locations, including along El Qasr and El Jamaa streets.
Reports from local emergency groups indicate that over the past week, 50 civilians have been killed, including 10 volunteers, and at least 82 individuals have been detained by the RSF and their allies. Efforts by humanitarian organizations are being hindered by the violence, with volunteers facing threats of death, detention, and torture. In a tragic incident at Nasser Square, five women were reportedly killed during a drone strike, while the RSF maintains blockades in several besieged areas of Khartoum.
In North Darfur, the SAF’s 6th Infantry Division confirmed the deaths of an RSF commander and 15 of his fighters in an airstrike aimed at disrupting RSF movements towards El Fasher. Concurrently, drones destroyed RSF supply lines as the city faced shelling that damaged local infrastructure. Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab disclosed that the RSF has burned at least 18 villages within the region, leading to significant civilian displacement and destruction of livelihoods.
Meanwhile, North Kordofan has seen a brief lull in violence, with reports of peace in El Obeid following weeks of RSF bombardment. Conversely, El Fula, located in West Kordofan, is experiencing a major influx of displaced individuals, and activists report that conditions for these refugees are deteriorating due to a lack of available aid.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, particularly in Khartoum and surrounding regions, has led to significant civilian casualties, extensive property damage, and an alarming humanitarian crisis. As the SAF pushes closer to the Republican Palace, the RSF continues to pose a formidable challenge. The destruction of villages and the displacement of populations further underscore the dire need for a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
