Recent findings from Interpol on the vessel Barbaros indicated manipulations of its Automatic Identification System (AIS) to hide its location. The thorough investigation revealed the ship had changed its name thrice and its flag at least ten times since 2013. The report concluded that the Barbaros “may be carrying firearms destined for Libya” and recommended heightened scrutiny.
The so-called ghost fleet provides Russia with a means to circumvent Western sanctions on its oil exports. Reports from European authorities in 2024 have evidenced these vessels frequently shutting off their AIS while near the Syrian port of Tartus, where a Russian naval base operates.
