The JSFM has condemned the enforced disappearance of activist Taiib Laghari, allegedly abducted by the ISI. Laghari’s case exemplifies a broader issue of oppression against Sindhi activists in Pakistan. The movement is also addressing environmental concerns due to canal constructions on the Indus River. It calls for international intervention against human rights abuses and emphasizes the need for justice and self-determination for the Sindhi nation.
The Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement (JSFM) has vehemently condemned the enforced disappearance of Taiib Laghari, an activist reportedly abducted by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, on January 26. With no information about his whereabouts after several weeks, his family’s distress has fueled outrage among Sindhi nationalists, highlighting an escalating trend of state oppression against activists in Pakistan.
In a recent press release, JSFM emphasized that Pakistan’s actions against Sindhi individuals reflect a larger campaign of coercion and violence. The group stated, “Pakistan continues to forcibly disappear Sindhi activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, using fear and repression to silence those who demand justice and self-determination.”
Furthermore, JSFM accused the Pakistani government of an economic and environmental assault on Sindh by unlawfully constructing six canals on the Indus River. This diversion of water resources to Punjab threatens the livelihoods of millions of Sindhis reliant on these water sources for agriculture and daily survival. “This is a direct threat to Sindh’s existence,” the organization affirmed.
On March 15, 2025, protests were held outside the Pakistan Embassy in London, organized by the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) to express concerns over human rights violations and environmental issues. JSFM Chairman Sohail Abro participated, advocating for the release of Laghari and others who have been forcibly disappeared, stating that Pakistan must be accountable for its actions.
Abro insisted, “We demand the immediate release of Taiib Laghari and all forcibly disappeared Sindhi activists. The illegal construction of canals on the Indus River must be halted, and the Sindhi nation’s right to self-determination must be recognized.”
JSFM has urged various international entities, including the United Nations and Human Rights organizations, to take action against Pakistan’s alleged human rights abuses. The movement asserted, “Sindh is under attack–its people are being abducted, and its water is being stolen. The world cannot remain silent while Pakistan continues its crimes against the Sindhi nation.”
JSFM’s call for intervention comes in light of the escalating concerns regarding human rights violations in Pakistan, particularly against activists and political dissenters, with various international watchdogs highlighting issues of enforced disappearances in the region.
The Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement has raised urgent calls for international awareness regarding the enforced disappearance of Taiib Laghari and the ongoing repression faced by Sindhi activists in Pakistan. The situation underscores a broader humanitarian crisis related to human rights and environmental degradation in the region. The JSFM’s appeal to global organizations serves as a critical reminder of the need for accountability and advocacy for justice, self-determination, and protection of vulnerable populations.
