Iraq’s Position on the Global Happiness Index: 101st Place

Iraq ranks 101st globally and 8th in the Arab world on the happiness index in the latest World Happiness Report, which evaluated happiness across 147 nations based on factors like social support and trust. Finland, maintaining its position for eight years, remains the happiest country. UAE ranks highest among Arab nations.

The recent World Happiness Report has positioned Iraq at 101st place globally and 8th in the Arab region, as it assessed well-being across 147 nations. This research, resulting from a partnership between Gallup, Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, utilized data from 2022 to 2024. Key components influencing happiness included social support, income, health, and levels of corruption.

One noteworthy finding was that “belief in kindness and trust in others” significantly impacts happiness, more than previously assumed. The study indicated a correlation between the expectation of strangers returning lost items and increased happiness levels. Nordic countries, recognized for their happiness, also excel in trust-based measures.

Iraq achieved a happiness score of 4.979 out of 10. Finland has once again been affirmed as the happiest country in the world with a score of 7.735, maintaining its position for eight consecutive years. Other Scandinavian nations, including Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, follow closely behind in happiness rankings. Notably, the Netherlands returned to the top five, while Costa Rica and Mexico debuted in tenth and sixth places respectively, with Norway in seventh.

Among major economies, Germany was ranked 22nd, the UK 23rd, and the United States fell to 24th place, while Russia is positioned at 66th. In the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates stood out at 21st globally, trailed by Kuwait at 30th and Saudi Arabia at 32nd. Other Arab nations in the top rankings included Oman at 52nd and Bahrain at 59th, while Libya, Algeria, and Iraq followed at 79th, 84th, and 101st.

At the lower end of the happiness spectrum, Afghanistan garnered the title of the least happy country, ranked 147th, accompanied by Sierra Leone (146th) and Lebanon (145th).

In summary, Iraq ranks 101st in the global happiness index according to the World Happiness Report. The study reveals that social factors such as trust and kindness significantly influence happiness levels. Finland persists as the happiest nation, with Iraq’s position reflecting ongoing challenges. Notably, regional happiness variations are highlighted, with the UAE leading the Arab rankings, while Afghanistan is recognized as the least happy country.
