On March 16, 2025, Google South Africa unveiled its new Google Cloud region in Johannesburg, representing a significant investment in business and technological transformation for both South Africa and the entire continent. This initiative will provide Africa with access to a leading data warehouse platform globally, enhancing the local business landscape.
This project positions South Africa within Google Cloud’s extensive network, which includes 40 regions and 121 zones worldwide that serve over 200 countries and territories. Ferdinand Steenkamp, Co-Founder of Cape Town’s Tregter, remarked, “Bringing Google Cloud services closer to our local customers will enable them to innovate and securely deliver faster, more reliable experiences to their own customers.”
Steenkamp further indicated that this investment in cloud services is projected to contribute approximately $2.1 billion to South Africa’s GDP and create over 40,000 job opportunities by 2030. He noted the potential of Africa’s internet economy, estimated to reach $180 billion by 2025, accounting for 5.2% of the continent’s GDP.
This investment is a part of Google’s broader commitment to invest $1 billion in Africa’s digital transformation, essential for nurturing tech talent and enhancing the startup ecosystem. To support this initiative, Google South Africa has also implemented training through programs like Cloud OnBoard and Cloud Hero, which address key technology themes such as generative AI, machine learning, and digital marketing.
Moreover, the launch will bolster existing programs for African startups, including the Black Founders Fund Africa and Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, which have collectively supported numerous startups across 17 countries and facilitated substantial funding. Steenkamp concluded, “Google South Africa will inevitably play a part in creating a more level playing field for African tech entrepreneurs.”
The launch of the Google Cloud region in Johannesburg marks a pivotal advancement for South Africa and Africa as a whole, providing critical infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth and job creation. By investing in local tech capabilities, Google is not only enhancing the business environment but also supporting the development of local tech talent and startups. This initiative signifies a transformative approach to nurturing Africa’s burgeoning internet economy.
