A high-level ECOWAS delegation, led by Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, will return to Liberia on March 23, 2025, to address the House leadership crisis. This visit follows an unsuccessful mediation in 2024 and precedes a Supreme Court hearing regarding the dispute. The team plans to engage with political leaders and civil society to explore solutions.
Monrovia is preparing for the arrival of a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday, March 23, 2025. This visit aims to address the prevailing leadership crisis within the House of Representatives. This will be ECOWAS’s second intervention, following their unsuccessful mediation attempt in 2024.
Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and former Nigerian Foreign Minister, will lead the delegation. Accompanying him are several notable figures, including Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, and Mr. Francis Acquah-Aikins, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner.
The timing of this delegation is crucial, as Liberia’s Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on a significant bill filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa on March 26, 2025. The court’s decision may significantly influence the resolution of this political impasse.
During their stay, the ECOWAS team will meet with important political leaders and civil society representatives to discuss potential solutions. Meetings are planned with Foreign Minister Sarah Beysolow Nyanti, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and members of the Senate and the Rule of Law Caucus.
Moreover, the delegation will also consult with Representative Richard Koon and other Majority Bloc Representatives, along with former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah. As legislative paralysis continues, there is cautious optimism that the combination of the judiciary’s involvement and ECOWAS’s renewed diplomatic efforts might lead to a resolution.
The ECOWAS delegation’s impending visit to Liberia underscores the organization’s commitment to resolving the leadership crisis within the House of Representatives. By engaging with key political stakeholders and aligning with judicial proceedings, there are renewed hopes for a constructive resolution to this prolonged political deadlock.
