The UFPU-12 contingent’s operational support has been vital in the fight against Al-Shabaab and in strengthening community trust.

The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recently honored officers from the Uganda Police for their significant contributions toward peace in Somalia. The event, which took place at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu, was attended by AUSSOM Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu and other prominent officials.

In his address, Mr. Bam highlighted the officers’ resilience and dedication during their mission against Al-Shabaab. He commended the Ugandan Government for its commitment to regional stability, stating that the officers had displayed unwavering determination while restoring law and order and strengthening trust among the Somali people.

The UFPU-12 contingent, deployed in April 2024 as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), played a pivotal role in providing operational support to the Somali Police Force. AIGP Kanu acknowledged the contingent’s dedication by emphasizing their resilience and courage in facing operational challenges while protecting key installations and engaging in community policing.

Commander of UFPU-12, SSP Justus Asiimwe, recognized the close collaboration between Ugandan officers and the Nigerian Formed Police Unit. He expressed appreciation for the relationships developed between the teams, valuing their mutual understanding.

Key figures at the event included ACP Samuel Asiedu Okanta, ACP Richard Evans Onyait, ACP John Simon, and Col. Christoper Tumwine Columbus, who represent various leadership roles within AUSSOM. The Formed Police Units (FPUs) contribute operational support, including VIP protection, security at events, and mentoring for the Somali Police Force, alongside other nations such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

In summary, the AUSSOM ceremony underscored the bravery and dedication of the Uganda Police officers in their peacekeeping efforts in Somalia. Their collaboration with the Somali Police Force and international partners further illustrates their commitment to enhancing stability and security in the region. The support provided by the UFPU-12 contingent plays a crucial role in reinforcing these efforts and fostering trust within the community.
