Southern Baptists’ Ongoing Relief Efforts After Hurricane Helene

Southern Baptists have provided extensive relief to survivors of Hurricane Helene since its landfall in September 2024, focusing on rebuilding efforts six months later. The disaster led to 248 fatalities and considerable damage, prompting a unified response across several states. With support from volunteers, local initiatives are underway to rebuild homes and restore faith in the community.

Southern Baptists have been instrumental in providing relief to survivors of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall on September 26, 2024, in Florida. As the six-month anniversary of the storm approaches, the focus of their efforts has transitioned towards aiding communities in rebuilding. Helene caused 248 fatalities and roughly $78.7 billion in damages, ranking it as the seventh-costliest hurricane in U.S. history.

Josh Benton, Vice President for National Ministry at Send Relief, emphasized the extensive impact of Hurricane Helene, stating, “What set Helene apart was the widespread impact of the storm. Southern Baptist Disaster Relief had to cover hundreds of miles of territory in the response.” The commitment of state disaster relief leadership and volunteers was commendable, as their efforts to assist and share the gospel have been vital in the aftermath.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) has provided over one million meals and performed more than 7,800 recovery jobs, resulting in 244 professions of faith reported across nearly 40 SBDR sites in various states including Florida and North Carolina. In Appalachia, the focus has now turned towards rebuilding, with local initiatives achieving considerable success.

Notably, Tennessee’s first lady, Maria Lee, actively participated with Tennessee Baptists in their Arise and Build initiative, which has completed over 110 rebuild jobs. In western North Carolina, particularly around Asheville, the devastation was profound, highlighting the community’s resilience as Baptists united to aid recovery efforts.

Todd Unzicker, Executive Director-Treasurer for N.C. Baptists, praised the collaborative efforts of local churches, remarking, “When disaster struck our state last fall, we saw N.C. Baptists and Great Commission Baptists from around the country live out what it means to be ‘on mission together.’” SBDR’s immediate actions included providing direct support for immediate needs and transitioning into long-term rebuild assistance.

Richard Weeks, an associational mission strategist for the Eastern Baptist Association, has been actively engaged since October 5, 2024, coordinating efforts to assist in the rebuilding of homes in the most affected areas. The rebuilding process is methodically organized into phases to expedite occupancy before winter’s onset.

As of now, approximately 1,400 disaster response teams, comprising over 7,000 volunteers, have contributed to the rebuild, successfully completing around 130 homes while 250 additional rebuilds are in progress. Unzicker expressed gratitude for the positive changes, noting, “I’ve heard incredible stories about churches reaching their neighbors and seeing them come to faith and get baptized – through the impact of Helene response.”

Weeks recounted stories of individuals who regained faith in the church through the assistance they received, stating, “You know, we’ve left the church. We had lost faith in the church… but this has brought back a hope and a faith that the church is really at the forefront of trying to meet the needs of people.” He shared a poignant experience about a family in Canton, where the kindness shown by volunteers led the wife to reconnect with her faith.

Baptists on Mission have received a $3 million grant from the North Carolina government to bolster rebuilding efforts, with additional support from Send Relief. Donations can also be made through ServeNC to help sustain volunteer efforts for the storm survivors throughout 2025.

In conclusion, the collaboration and dedication exhibited by Southern Baptists demonstrate the positive impact of faith-based relief efforts following disasters. Their comprehensive approach to immediate support and long-term rebuilding showcases resilience, community spirit, and a commitment to serving those in need. The ongoing work continues to uplift those affected by Hurricane Helene as they strive to rebuild their lives.

The Southern Baptists’ response to Hurricane Helene exemplifies the power of community support in times of disaster. Their efforts have not only provided necessary relief but have also rekindled faith in many individuals. With ongoing initiatives funded by significant grants and donations, the rebuilding process remains a beacon of hope for tornado-affected families. The mission of service and compassion continues to thrive as Southern Baptists work diligently alongside affected communities towards recovery and restoration.
