Mozambique and Zambia have signed an agreement to interconnect their energy systems, enhancing electricity supply within the SADC. The project, executed by EDM and ZESCO, will involve a 376-kilometer power transmission line and an investment of 411.5 million dollars. It aims to boost energy trade and revenue, showcasing the vital role of regional cooperation in Africa’s energy landscape.
On Wednesday, Mozambique and Zambia formalized their commitment to bolster their electricity interconnection by signing a significant agreement. This initiative, aimed at enhancing energy supply within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), will be executed by the state-run Mozambican electricity company, EDM, and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, ZESCO.
The Memorandum of Understanding was officially signed by António Manda, the Permanent Secretary of Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, alongside Zambian Minister of Energy, Makoze Chikote. This endeavor is projected to demand an investment of approximately 411.5 million dollars, facilitating an increased energy supply capacity and reinforcing Mozambique’s stature within the regional energy market.
The interconnection project is designed to promote energy exchange, thereby fostering trade with other SADC member states while generating additional revenue for Mozambique. As outlined in the agreement, a 400 kV power transmission line will be constructed, extending roughly 376 kilometers from the Matambo Substation in Mozambique to the Chipata West Substation in Zambia.
During the signing ceremony, Joaquim Ou-chim, the chairperson of EDM, emphasized that the formal agreement transitions the project from a planning phase into execution. He stated, “In the current global energy scenario, regional cooperation is no longer an option but a necessity.” Ou-chim underscored that, as Africa strives for greater energy integration, such initiatives are crucial for fostering a more connected and self-sufficient continent.
The recent agreement between Mozambique and Zambia represents a significant step towards enhancing regional energy cooperation and supply.
