Vietnam and Hungary are poised to strengthen their cooperation across various sectors, celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties. The leaders emphasized enhancing trade, investment, and collaboration in education and agriculture, while also addressing regional challenges peacefully. Both countries recognize further opportunities within the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.
On March 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son engaged in discussions with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Szijjarto Peter in Hanoi. They emphasized the intent to enhance cooperation between Vietnam and Hungary across various sectors, coinciding with the upcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations established in 1950.
Minister Son acknowledged the significance of Minister Szijjarto’s visit, remarking it would contribute to the Vietnam-Hungary comprehensive partnership. He reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to fostering stronger multifaceted cooperation with Hungary, which it considers its first comprehensive partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
During the meeting, Minister Szijjarto expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and international integration efforts. He acknowledged Vietnam’s growing influence both regionally and globally, indicating Hungary’s desire to strengthen its ties with Vietnam as a leading Southeast Asian partner.
The two officials noted the flourishing friendship and cooperation across various domains over the past 75 years, specifically highlighting achievements in politics, trade, investment, education, health care, and cultural exchanges. Presently, Hungary serves as a significant trading partner for Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe, while Vietnam emerges as a promising market for Hungary in Asia. Despite global economic challenges, bilateral trade has consistently maintained around 1 billion USD annually.
Recognizing untapped potential for further collaboration, both parties agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and coordinated efforts at multilateral forums, including the UN and the ASEAN-EU cooperation framework. They also plan to leverage the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to facilitate mutual access for agricultural products and encourage Hungarian investment in sectors aligned with Vietnam’s needs and Hungary’s expertise.
Additionally, the officials agreed to expedite the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and to pursue cooperation in various sectors, including education, nuclear power training, agriculture, and climate change mitigation. They also concurred on the necessity of negotiating a readmission agreement to boost labor cooperation and will soon convene the 10th session of the Vietnam-Hungary Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation.
On regional and international issues, including the situations in the East Sea and Ukraine, both sides expressed their commitment to peaceful resolution through respect for the UN Charter and international law.
The recent discussions between Vietnam and Hungary indicate a shared commitment to enhancing multifaceted cooperation, especially as they approach the landmark anniversary of diplomatic relations. Both nations recognize their potential for trade and investment growth while prioritizing collaboration in education, agriculture, and addressing climate change. Their dedication to peaceful resolutions for regional issues further underscores the importance of their bilateral relations moving forward.
