The United States government, through Ricky Gill, National Security Assistant to President Donald Trump, has reiterated its ongoing commitment to providing economic assistance to Nepal. This assurance was given during a meeting with Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, held at the Raisina Dialogue conference in New Delhi. Key aspects of Nepal-US relations were discussed during this meeting, as informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
Foreign Minister Dr. Rana urged immediate action from the US government for the release of Bipin, a Nepali student abducted by Hamas in October 2023. She emphasized that Nepal has been actively seeking US intervention and support in securing Bipin’s safe return following his abduction in Israel. The Government of Nepal has consistently engaged in diplomatic efforts on this matter, appealing to global leaders for assistance.
In addition, Foreign Minister Dr. Rana engaged in separate discussions with her Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar, focusing on enhancing Nepal-India relations in areas such as trade, transit, and hydropower development. The meeting underscored Nepal’s commitment to fortifying bilateral ties for shared prosperity. Separation of meetings also included bilateral talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha regarding Nepal-Ukraine relations and the release of seven Nepali individuals purportedly recruited by the Russian military through trafficking.
Dr. Rana criticized the illicit enlistment of these nationals and requested their release from Ukrainian custody, while Minister Sybiha assured adherence to legal protocols for their return. Moreover, Dr. Rana sought Ukraine’s endorsement for Nepal’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council. An agreement for visa-free entry for diplomatic passport holders from both countries was also signed.
Following this, Dr. Rana met Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mihai Popsoi, to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation. She highlighted the pressing issues of climate change impacting Nepal and sought joint efforts to address these challenges. Furthermore, Dr. Rana informed Minister Popsoi about Nepal’s impending graduation from least developed country status in 2026, emphasizing the need for international support during the transition.
