Renew Europe has expressed strong condemnation of the mass sexual violence perpetrated in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, emphasizing the heightened vulnerability of women and children. An urgency resolution proposed by the Group urges the European Union and its Member States to support the International Criminal Court’s investigations into genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Furthermore, it calls for an increase in humanitarian aid for Sudan and neighboring nations, as well as funding for survivors of sexual violence.
UNICEF findings indicate that approximately 12.1 million people in Sudan are at risk of gender-based violence, with 221 reported cases of rape involving children in the past year. Alarmingly, 16 of these victims were under five years old. It is imperative for all conflict parties to ensure safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian actors like the World Food Programme, as two-thirds of Sudan’s population is at risk.
Hilde Vautmans, MEP, emphasized the need for immediate European intervention, stating, “For far too long, Europe has looked away from what is happening in Sudan. Today, we make a clear statement, Europe must act and work towards a ceasefire.” She urged for sanctions against war criminals and the enforcement of a UN arms embargo across the country to protect women and children from further sexual violence.
